Solar panels in Northern Portugal: the 2026 guide

Solar works in the north, just less than in the south. PVGIS puts the 24 Minho municipalities between 1,349 and 1,508 kWh per kWp a year, against 1,722 in Faro. Prices carry 23% VAT since July 2025, the installer registers the system with DGEG before installing, and the decision that matters most is how much of the production you will use yourself.

How much the sun gives in the Minho

Coastal municipalities produce more than inland and higher ones. Esposende and Viana do Castelo lead; Melgaço and Paredes de Coura, further north and higher, come last. The spread from top to bottom is about 12%.

What it costs

Installers certified by DGEG quoted 2026 averages of €5,500 to €7,500 for a turnkey 4 kWp system, with VAT. The cost guide has the full table and a worked payback.

How a system gets installed and registered

  1. Quotes compared on four numbers

Total kWp, price per kWp, usable battery kWh and warranty years per part. See how to compare quotes.

  2. Prior notice on the DGEG portal

The installing technician registers the system in your name before installing. Free up to 30 kW. See the DGEG guide.

  3. Installation by an accredited installer

A recognised installation entity or responsible technician, which ERSE asks owners to check.

  4. E‑REDES on the grid side

A production CPE is assigned; above 4 kW of installed power a production meter is mandatory.

  5. Insurance and, if you want, a surplus contract

Civil liability insurance is mandatory for a registered system. Selling the surplus needs a contract with a retailer.

Is a battery worth it?

A battery pays when you are out during the day and home in the evening, or when you want power during a blackout. Grid tied systems switch off when the grid fails, so the panels alone do not keep the lights on: that needs a hybrid inverter with a backup function and a battery. The Iberian blackout of 28 April 2025 made this the question many households now ask first.

Our battery quiz gives a quick first answer for your pattern of use.

Incentives

VAT is 23%, there is no IRS deduction for the installation, surplus sales are outside IRS up to €1,000 a year and some municipalities reduce IMI for efficient homes. Details in the incentives guide.

Special cases

Self consumption is growing fast across the country: ERSE counted about 237,000 self consumers in mainland Portugal at the end of 2024, with the number of units growing about 44% a year since 2021.
