Questions, answered

Short answers to the questions people ask most before putting solar panels on a house in Portugal. Each one leads to the guide or tool with the full answer and its sources.

What does a home solar system cost in 2026?

Installers certified by DGEG quoted average turnkey prices in 2026 of €4,500 to €6,000 for 3 kWp, €5,500 to €7,500 for 4 kWp and €6,500 to €9,000 for 5 kWp, with the 23% VAT that has applied since July 2025. A 5 kWh battery adds about €3,500 to €4,500. In the north each kWp produces less than in the south, which stretches payback.

How much will I save?

Pick your municipality and enter your monthly bill. The calculator sizes a system to your consumption, uses the PVGIS yield for your municipality and shows the yearly saving, the surplus income and the payback, as ranges from published figures. For a real price, ask installers for quotes.

How much does a solar system produce where I live?

It depends on the municipality. The European Commission's PVGIS gives from 1,010 kWh per kWp a year in São Roque do Pico to 1,735 in Vila do Bispo; the median of the 308 municipalities is 1,514. Each municipality has its own page, with the yield month by month and by roof direction.

How do I compare quotes from different installers?

Two solar quotes can be €600 apart and still not describe the same system. Put every quote on the same four numbers: total kWp, price per kWp, usable battery kWh and warranty years for each part, in writing. Then run the eight checks in the guide before you sign anything.

Do I need a battery?

A battery pays when you are out during the day and home in the evening, or when you want power in a blackout. Answer three questions to see which applies to you, what a battery costs and what it changes.

Do solar panels give power during a blackout?

Not on their own. Grid tied systems switch off when the grid fails, so the panels alone do not keep the lights on: that needs a hybrid inverter with a backup function and a battery. The Iberian blackout of 28 April 2025 made this the question many households now ask first.

Do I have to register the system with DGEG?

Almost every home solar system in Portugal, between 700 W and 30 kW, needs a prior notice (mera comunicação prévia) on the DGEG portal. The installer submits it for you, before the installation, and it is free. Skip it and you cannot sell your surplus or take out the civil liability insurance the system needs.

Is my system a UPAC or a UPP?

A home solar system in Portugal is a UPAC, a unit producing for self consumption, under Decreto‑Lei 15/2022. UPP was the regime for small units that sold everything they produced to the grid. For a house today the question is not which regime, but how much of your own production you will use, because surplus earns little.

Are there grants or tax breaks in 2026?

In 2026 the help for home solar in Portugal is thin. VAT on panels and installation has been 23% since 1 July 2025. There is no IRS deduction for the installation. Surplus you sell is outside IRS up to €1,000 a year, some municipalities cut IMI for efficient homes, and a voucher for small kits was announced but had not opened at our last check.

Is solar worth it on a holiday home?

A holiday home earns its savings only while you are there to use the electricity. When it stands empty, production goes to the grid, where on a fixed contract it sold for about €0.05 per kWh in 2026. So a smaller system usually suits a holiday home better, a battery is mainly worth it for blackouts, and the DGEG rules are exactly the same as for a main home.

When does an off grid system make sense?

Off grid solar makes sense in one situation: a rural property where bringing in the grid costs more than a stand alone system over ten to fifteen years. Where the grid is already connected, a grid tied system is simpler and cheaper. Off grid systems have to be sized for December, when panels in the Minho produce about half of what they produce in July.

What does it cost to ask for quotes through Minho Solar?

Nothing. Installers pay €150 + IVA when a customer we sent them signs a contract, the same amount for any system, so we earn no more when a system is bigger.
