If your Northern Portugal property sits empty for months at a time, system sizing, battery logic, and payback calculations all need to account for your actual occupancy pattern, not an average household's.
How holiday home solar differs from a primary residence
Self consumption is lower
A system sized for daily occupancy will overproduce when you are away. Excess electricity exports to the grid at a regulated feed-in tariff that is lower than the retail rate. This shifts the economics: a smaller system often makes more financial sense for a holiday home.
Battery logic is different
Batteries are most valuable when you are at home in the evening and want to use stored solar power rather than buy from the grid. For a holiday home, a battery is mainly worth it for blackout resilience, not for daily self consumption savings.
DGEG registration still applies
The DGEG registration requirement is the same for holiday homes as for primary residences. Some owners assume it only applies to full-time properties. It does not. Every grid tied installation in Portugal must be registered, regardless of occupancy.
Remote monitoring matters more
When you are not in Portugal, you cannot see whether the system is producing or whether something is wrong. Ask your installer about remote monitoring options and ensure the inverter supports app-based production tracking.
