About Minho Solar

An independent solar advisory for English-speaking expats in Northern Portugal, run by homeowners in the Minho, not a call centre or an installer.

Minho Solar is an independent solar advisory for English-speaking expats in Northern Portugal. Not a call centre. Not an installer. Not affiliated with any single installer or manufacturer.

Minho Solar was founded by James in the Ponte de Lima area after going through the Portuguese solar buying process first hand in 2022 and 2023: conflicting installer quotes, DGEG paperwork, and national calculators that overstate what solar actually produces in the north.

We built Minho Solar to fix that for other expats in the region. We charge a flat fee for an independent property analysis, called the Blueprint, and put you in touch with two or three vetted installers on merit, not margin.

Every recommendation is based on local PVGIS irradiance data for the Minho, not national averages that flatter the south of the country.

We are based here, not in a Lisbon call centre

Our team is in the Minho, not a remote call centre. We went through the same solar decision you are facing now: Portuguese quotes, DGEG paperwork, installers pushing the system that paid them most.

We know the Minho, not national averages

Irradiance in Ponte de Lima is 30 percent lower than the Algarve. Most online calculators use national data that flatters the north. We use PVGIS data for your specific postcode.

We check the quotes before you sign

Send us the quotes. We check the system spec, the price, the warranty terms, the DGEG plan. If something is off, we tell you. If the price is fair, we tell you that too.

How Minho Solar got here

  1. 2022James navigated the Portuguese solar buying process in the Minho. Conflicting installer quotes, DGEG paperwork entirely in Portuguese, no independent guidance to be found.
  2. 20236 kWp hybrid system with 10 kWh battery installed and running at James's property in Ponte de Lima.
  3. 2025April Iberian blackout. Every circuit in the house stayed on. James started advising expat neighbours informally shortly after.
  4. 2026Launched Minho Solar to do this properly, full time.
