Solar incentives in Portugal in 2026 are more limited than many expats expect. The main support mechanism is an IRS tax deduction available to Portuguese tax residents, plus a municipal IMI discount that varies by location. What Portugal does not have in 2026 is a direct residential grant scheme for solar. Those programmes ended. The VAT on residential installations also rose from 6 percent to 23 percent in mid-2025, adding approximately €900 to €1,500 to the cost of a typical 6 kWp system. Solar still makes financial sense in the region, but the numbers have changed.

Before July 2025, residential solar installations in Portugal qualified for the reduced VAT rate of 6 percent. The reduced rate ended when the government did not extend it. The full standard rate of 23 percent now applies to all residential solar installations. On a 6 kWp system costing €7,000 before tax, this adds approximately €1,190 compared to the previous rate. Payback periods that were 6 to 8 years before the change are now closer to 8 to 11 years.

Yes, but the case is based on savings, not incentives. A well sized system in the Minho will offset 60 to 80 percent of a typical household's electricity consumption. At €0.22 per kWh for grid electricity, a 6 kWp system generating 7,000 to 8,500 kWh per year with realistic self consumption rates, avoids approximately €1,000 to €1,300 in electricity bills annually.

After the VAT increase, typical payback periods for a 6 kWp system in Northern Portugal are 8 to 11 years, compared to 6 to 8 years before mid-2025. The IRS deduction, where accessible, shortens this by one to two years for tax residents. The panels themselves typically carry a 25 year performance guarantee, so the long term case remains sound. The maths just requires a more careful look than it did two years ago.
